Shannon or Dublin: which airport to fly into for the west of Ireland

For the west of Ireland, Shannon is the shorter landing: the Cliffs of Moher are 1 h 10 min from the terminal and Galway 1 h 20 min, against 2 h 15 min from Dublin Airport to Galway. In our own bookings and enquiries, Shannon Airport comes up 392 times as a pickup or drop-off, Dublin Airport 127. Dublin wins when the flight times or the fares are better, and then the drive west is one transfer in one car.

The drive from each airport

The difference is mostly the width of the country. Shannon sits on the Clare side of the Shannon Estuary, so the west starts at the car park. Dublin is on the east coast, and every journey west begins with the motorway across the midlands.

These are typical door-to-door times from our price list, for one car and one party.

What landing is like

Shannon has a single terminal and a car park two minutes from the door, so the walk from the name sign to the car is short even with cases and golf clubs. Transatlantic flights land early in the morning, and our dispatch runs around the clock for them.

Dublin has two terminals and is the busiest airport on the island. We read the terminal off your flight number, so there is nothing to work out on landing. The road out is the one to plan around: the M50 and the port tunnel slow down between 07:00 and 09:30 and again from 16:00, and we build that into the pickup time.

Why Shannon dominates our own bookings

The 392 against 127 is our own count of pickups and drop-offs, from an analysis of all our bookings and enquiries in August 2026. We are based in Limerick, twenty-six kilometres from Shannon, so the figure partly reflects where we are. It also reflects where people go: Shannon Airport to Galway alone appears 80 times, Dublin Airport to Galway 8.

The pattern says less about the airports than about the trips. A party touring Clare, Galway or Kerry gains a morning by landing in the west.

When Dublin is the right airport

A cheaper fare, a direct flight from your home airport or a few nights in Dublin first can all outweigh the drive. The west is then a single cross-country transfer: Dublin Airport to Galway is from EUR 640 for the whole car, Limerick from EUR 620, quoted as one journey with the tolls inside the price.

Many trips use both airports. Fly into one and out of the other, and nobody has to drive back across the country on the last day. When the flight home leaves from Dublin, Shannon to Dublin Airport is a regular airport-to-airport run of about 2 h 40 min, planned around the check-in time.

Questions

In short

Which airport is closer to the west of Ireland, Shannon or Dublin?

Shannon. Galway is 1 h 20 min from Shannon Airport and 2 h 15 min from Dublin Airport. The Cliffs of Moher are 1 h 10 min from Shannon.

Is it worth flying into Dublin and driving west?

If the flights are cheaper or more direct, often yes. The drive west is one transfer, from EUR 640 to Galway for the whole car, so compare that with the difference in fares.

Can we land at Shannon and fly home from Dublin?

Yes. Shannon to Dublin Airport takes about 2 h 40 min, and we plan the pickup so you reach Dublin with time to check in.

Do you meet early transatlantic arrivals at Shannon?

Yes. Dispatch runs twenty-four hours a day, and the pickup time follows the flight, so an early landing is booked the same way as any other.
