How long do you need at the Cliffs of Moher?
Two hours is enough for most visits. The official ticket covers a 2 hour visit from your time of entry, and the walk the official site recommends is a 3.5 km round trip, north past O'Brien's Tower and south to the viewing platform. Two hours is also the time our full-day tour gives the cliffs.
What fits into two hours
The visit has two halves on either side of the visitor centre. North, the path runs about a kilometre to O'Brien's Tower, with the Atlantic and the Aran Islands in view, and an 800 metre stretch beyond the tower is now open. South, the path runs to the viewing platform and back.
In our experience an hour and a half covers the main paths and the tower. Two hours leaves time to walk the northern stretch slowly and see the exhibition inside the visitor centre.
| Part of the visit | Distance | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| North path to O'Brien's Tower | About 1 km each way | The views of the Aran Islands, and the open stretch beyond the tower |
| Southern viewing platform | 1.5 km there and back | Looking south along the cliffs |
| The full recommended walk | 3.5 km in total | Both paths from the visitor centre |
| Visitor centre exhibition | Indoors | Included in the ticket, useful if the weather turns |
The ticket sets the clock
The official site states that a ticket allows a 2 hour visit from your time of entry. Parking and the exhibition are included in the admission, and children under 12 go free with a parent or guardian, up to four children. The free child place does not apply to school groups or groups arriving by coach.
Booking online is cheaper than paying at the gate. The published rates for 2027 are 14 euro for an adult online at peak times, 9 euro off peak and 16 euro at the gate. Peak and off-peak windows change by month, so we check the current rate when we quote. Tickets are paid by you and are not part of our price.
Opening hours through the year
The longest opening hours are in summer, and a winter visit has to finish by five in the afternoon. The visitor centre is closed on 24, 25 and 26 December.
| Months | Open |
|---|---|
| January and February | 09:00 to 17:00 |
| March and April | 08:00 to 19:00 |
| May to August | 08:00 to 21:00 |
| September and October | 08:00 to 19:00 |
| November and December | 09:00 to 17:00 |
Longer walks, and what is closed
The coastal walk from Liscannor to the visitor centre, about 6 km, is fully closed for safety reasons. From Doolin you can walk as far as Surfers Path, but there is no access to the visitor centre from that side.
That keeps a visit to the cliffs to the paths either side of the centre. The official advice is to stay on the marked paths and never go beyond the walls or barriers.
How two hours fit into a day
From Shannon Airport the cliffs are 1 h 10 min by road each way. On our full-day tour the two hours sit between the Burren in the morning and lunch in Doolin, and the car waits in the car park while you walk.
A one-way transfer to the visitor centre is from EUR 195 for the car, and it ends at the drop-off: the car does not wait. If you want it there when you come back from the paths, ask for a touring day instead.
